Tales from the Road… Our Lady’s Catholic High School Preston

I’m freshly back from a week spent in Preston running a Book sprint there with a group of children in years seven and eight from Our Lady’s Catholic High School.

There was a lot to enjoy about the camp.  The facilities were excellent – OLCHS has a separate small building (like a mini-conference centre) that they use for interviews and professional development.  This meant that we had all the space and reliable technology that we might need, but my favourite thing was that I didn’t spent five days being utterly lost in the unmapped corridors of giant school.

OLCHS was our first Christmas book, mostly this is because our busy season is in June and July so it’s rarely appropriate but also because it’s often tricky to avoid the cliché with a Christmas story.  In this case, I needn’t have worried.   The OLCHS writers decided to explore what happens to the coal that Santa leaves for naughty children… and what happens when it wakes up…

My major reason for being up in Preston is that we’re making moves to try and open another White Water Writers Harbour at the University of Central Lancashire to complement the ones in London and Keele University.  So while I was in Preston I was also training three leaders in preparation for them to run their own camps in the general area. They performed well enough that I could take a couple of the days off to take meetings in the general area.

The uclan students getting involved.

It’s always nice when there is interaction from other aspects of the school and it was nice that the school photography club provided the cover image…

A wonderful camp – and I’m looking forward to seeing what they produce next year!
